Alabaster Lighting: Why Light Is Being Made From Stone Again

Alabaster lighting means sconces, pendants and floor lamps whose shade is cut from translucent natural stone: light travels through the body of the rock, loses its edge and pulls the veining into view. In large houses these fixtures belong in living rooms, bedrooms and enfilades — and almost never in bathrooms. Here is why.
Last autumn a client brought two sconces back from Milan. Stone, honey-coloured, heavy; the veining only shows when the lamp inside is on. He put the box on the meeting table and said he wanted the same thing throughout the house.
Throughout the house we did not do it. And that refusal is the most interesting thing about a material which, in 2026, turns up in every second feature about light.
A stone you can scratch with a fingernail
Let us start with the bad news. Alabaster is not the name of a rock but a trade name for two different stones. Gypsum alabaster has a Mohs hardness of 2 — a fingernail really does leave a mark on it. The calcite variety is slightly tougher at 3. For comparison: marble sits at 3–4, granite at 6–7, porcelain stoneware comfortably above 7.
Everything else follows from that number. Alabaster does not go on floors. It does not become a worktop. It has no place where people pass every day with bags, children and a dog. And it never goes into a wet room: the stone is porous, steam and water travel inside, and within a season the honey-coloured shade acquires cloudy patches that nothing will remove.
What it does instead is glow. A shade 6–12 mm thick works as a natural diffuser: the beam enters the stone, scatters on its crystals and comes out soft, without a single hotspot. No frosted glass does this, because glass dims light evenly and stone dims it unevenly — and it is precisely that unevenness the eye reads as alive.
Why light is being made from stone again
There is a dull explanation and an honest one.
The dull one is the trend. Material authenticity, tactility, quiet luxury — every word used to describe interiors this season works in alabaster’s favour. It is natural, every piece differs, and it cannot be faked at scale. The large lighting houses have already built on this: at Visual Comfort, whole Kelly Wearstler lines — Pedra, Pertica, Covet — are constructed around a stone shade, while CTO Lighting and Apparatus put the material at the centre of their collections.
I prefer the honest explanation. Fifteen years ago we all moved to LED and got even, cool, technically flawless light. It won on every measurable count and lost on feeling. A house lit purely by diodes looks like a well-photographed shop window: every detail is visible, and nobody wants to spend the evening in it. Stone in a shade is a way of giving light its unevenness back without returning to the incandescent bulb.
And here is the interesting part: alabaster is almost never the main source in a house. It is a source of mood. Task lighting is calculated separately, which I will come back to.
Where it works, and where it turns into a museum
It works wherever light should be soft and low.
Sconces along an enfilade at 1.6–1.8 m: two or three stone pools of light down a wall give a corridor its rhythm without a single ceiling fixture. A pendant over the dining table — the stone throws light downwards, the cloth and glassware do not flare, and faces get a warm fill. A desk lamp in a study. A floor lamp beside a library chair. A niche with a backlit stone panel in a bar or a wine room.
It fails wherever light is expected to work. A kitchen splashback: grease enters the pores and cannot be washed out. Bathrooms and hammams: steam. Children’s rooms and stairs: the stone chips on a single knock. A dressing room where shades of black must be told apart: honey light lies about colour.
There is one more failure mode — too much of it. When stone shades stand in every room, joined by a backlit wall, a backlit bar top and a backlit fireplace surround, the house stops being a house and becomes the showroom of a stone-cutting works. One or two glowing objects per floor is an event. Eight is a museum.
Three mistakes that make stone light look cheap
The first is a cool lamp. Alabaster opens up at 2700–3000 K with a colour rendering index of 90 or better. Put 4000 K inside and the honey stone turns grey and the veining becomes a dirty smear. We have seen it three times in the past year: an expensive Italian shade bought, then fitted with whatever the site foreman had left over.
The second is a source pressed against the stone. A point diode close to the slab produces a hotspot: the fixture itself shows through, and the whole diffusion effect disappears. For backlit stone panels the industry norm is a gap of roughly 38–40 mm between the LED panel and the stone, and around 60–65 mm for RGB backlighting, where diodes of different colours sit apart from one another. Inside a fitting the same problem is solved with an internal diffuser plus a setback; if the manufacturer has economised there, you will see the dots.
The third is imitation. The market is full of polymer and painted-glass “alabaster”. It is easy to spot: on a fake the pattern repeats from shade to shade and the glow is perfectly even. Natural stone glows in patches; there is always a denser area that stays darker. That unevenness is not a defect — it is exactly what you are paying for.
Alabaster or onyx: the price of a glowing wall
The two stones are constantly confused and often sit side by side in a specification, but they do different jobs.
Onyx is denser and more strongly banded. It gives a dramatic pattern but needs a stronger backlight, because light passes through it with more difficulty. On the other hand onyx is cut into large slabs, which is why glowing walls in houses are made from it. Current Moscow trade prices run from roughly 8,300–9,300 ₽/m² for a slab and from about 13,300 ₽/m² for white onyx; a finished backlit panel starts at 15,000–18,300 ₽/m², and with installation, a light box and pattern matching across the joints the figure reaches 35,000–65,000 ₽/m². Then there is upkeep: a water-repellent treatment every 6–12 months, or the stone absorbs everything that lands on it.
Alabaster is softer, warmer in tone and cheaper by the piece. But large slabs free of cracks barely exist — the rock is layered and brittle. Its destiny is a light fitting, not a wall.
We had a project where the client wanted a backlit alabaster panel of 2.4 × 1.2 m behind a basement bar. We went round the suppliers and did not find a single whole slab without internal cracks: under backlight any of them would have shown a cobweb. The wall was made from onyx in the end, and the alabaster went into three sconces above the counter. It came out better than planned: the wall carries the drama, the fittings carry the warmth. Our approach: stone light belongs in the design stage, not the finishing stage
A stone fixture is not a purchase, it is a detail to be engineered. Here is what we do before the client chooses anything.
We calculate the weight and set the fixings. A sconce with an alabaster shade weighs 4–9 kg; a 1.2 m pendant over a table easily passes twenty. That does not hang on a plug in plasterboard. The embedded fixing appears in the wall while the walls are still open — a year before the fitting arrives.
We hold one colour temperature. One temperature for the whole floor: 2700 K. A warm stone shade next to a cool downlight does not read as a device, it reads as an installation error. It is the single most common thing we correct during site supervision on other people’s projects.
We separate the scenes. Alabaster always sits on its own dimmable circuit, because its role is the evening. Daytime, task and cleaning scenes are covered by other fittings. All of this is written into the electrical design: circuits, drivers, access points for maintenance, dimming controls. Without that section an expensive fixture becomes a chandelier with a switch by the door.
We order in time. Stone does not sit in a warehouse in the quantity you need. A batch from a single block — and it must be a single block, or the colour will drift — takes 8–14 weeks. That is a working-drawings decision, not a finishing one. For us it is part of interior procurement: the specification with lead times is written while things can still be changed without losing the programme.
One last thing. Alabaster does not rescue a poor interior. It amplifies what is already there: in a resolved room it makes the evening, in an unresolved one it simply glows in a corner and costs money. Frequently asked questions
Can alabaster fixtures be used in a bathroom?
No. Alabaster is a porous stone with a Mohs hardness of 2–3 and it absorbs moisture and steam. In a bathroom, hammam or beside a pool the shade will pick up cloudy staining within a season or two, and it cannot be reversed. Wet areas take glass, ceramic or sealed onyx instead; keep glowing stone for dry rooms.
What lamp does an alabaster shade need?
A warm one: 2700–3000 K, colour rendering index of 90 or above, and dimmable without exception. Cool light from 4000 K upwards kills the honey tone and turns the veining into grey smears. The source must not press against the stone — an internal diffuser or a setback is required, otherwise the diode itself shows through the shade.
How does alabaster differ from onyx?
Alabaster is softer, warmer in colour and almost never available as a large whole slab, so it lives in light fittings. Onyx is denser and more strongly banded, needs a stronger backlight, but cuts into big slabs and therefore goes onto backlit walls and counters. Both are translucent, both fear moisture, and both need regular sealing.
What does a backlit stone wall cost?
At Moscow trade prices an onyx slab starts at 8,300–9,300 ₽/m² and white onyx at about 13,300 ₽/m². A finished backlit panel begins at 15,000–18,300 ₽/m². With installation, a light box and pattern matching across the joints the total usually lands between 35,000 and 65,000 ₽/m². Delivery of a single block takes 8–14 weeks.
