Portico with Columns: Why 9 Out of 10 Architects Draw It Wrong

Drove by Novaya Riga last week to a project. In ten kilometers counted fourteen homes where owners decided they need a classical portico with columns. Of those fourteen properly drawn—one. And “properly”—I’m being generous. Strictly per Vignola and Palladio—zero.
And these aren’t dacha self-builds. These are residences 2000–4000 square meters where projects were done by credentialed architects and crews with names built them. Budgets—from 300 million. And still: columns thick, capitals flat, entablature more like a barn cornice, proportions such that Andrea Palladio would turn in his grave if he could see.
This article is harsh breakdown why that happens. We’ll discuss order anatomy, show specific mistakes on specific homes (no addresses but you’ll recognize), explain how to spot architect who understands classicism from one who saved Pinterest picture yesterday.
Why Portico Isn’t “Four Columns and a Roof”
In our practice we regularly hear: “Just draw us a portico, four columns, pediment—nice that way.” After this we usually start long conversation.
Portico—isn’t scenery glued to facade. It’s system of proportions verified two and a half thousand years. When Greek in V century BC carved a capital, he wasn’t decorating—solving task: how show column carries entablature weight but does it nobly, without strain. Romans systematized. Palladio in XVI century described math. Vignola in “Rule of Five Orders” reduced to module.
Then 2024 comes. Client wants “like Peterhof.” Architect opens SketchUp. And it begins.
Problem—order isn’t about style. It’s about perception physics. Our eye evolved for certain ratios. When column too thick for its height—brain reads “weight, pressure, wrong.” When entablature too thin—”will collapse.” These readings work subconsciously, can’t trick with expensive stone or gold.
Anatomy: What Makes Up Classical Portico with Columns
Let’s break down. Bottom to top.
Stylobate and Pedestal
What colonnade stands on. Per Palladio it’s not just “steps.” Pedestal height relates to column height by ratio—usually about 1/3 of column height for two-story portico. When we see mansion where columns seemingly hammered straight into embankment—first sign architect didn’t understand what he was doing.
Column Base
Doric order might not have one. Ionic and Corinthian—mandatory. And it’s not decorative. Base visually “distributes” column weight onto pedestal. Height—usually half the column’s bottom diameter. Not more. Not less.
Shaft with Entasis
Here it gets interesting. Column—not cylinder. Never. Real classical column has entasis—slight thickening in lower third and smooth taper upward. Bottom diameter roughly 5/6 of top.
Why? Because perfect cylinder at 7–9 meter height visually seems concave in middle. Greeks noticed, corrected. Modern architect plastering smooth cylinder from stuccoed foam block, and client spends whole life looking at facade wondering why something’s off.
Capital
Column head. Transition from vertical support to horizontal entablature. Not “pretty thing with curlicues.” Doric capital—strict echinus and abacus. Ionic—volutes with specific geometry (Vignola derived it through compass arcs, doesn’t draw “by eye”). Corinthian—two rows acanthus leaves and volutes, leaves must be alive, not carved like soap.
Entablature
Most frequent disaster. Entablature—what sits on columns: architrave, frieze, cornice. Total height—roughly 1/4 of column height. Not 1/8, like people love “for elegance.” Not 1/3, done when not thinking at all.
Undersized entablature—colonnade looks bald. Oversized—oppressed. Ninety percent we see one or the other.
Pediment
Triangle on top. Height—1/5 to 1/4 of width. Anything higher—Gothic shed. Anything lower—flat box lid.
Classical Portico with Columns: Math You Can’t Violate
Palladio’s main secret—modular system. Everything tied to one measure: column base diameter. This is the module. Radius—half-module.
Then arithmetic:
– Doric column height with capital — 8 modules
– Ionic — 9 modules
– Corinthian — 10 modules
– Intercolumniation (space between) — 1.5 to 3 modules depending on type
Sounds bureaucratic? Now open photo of any mansion you dislike “can’t explain what’s wrong.” Measure by pixels column diameter and height. Nine times ten you’ll get 1:6 or 1:7. Column’s a barrel.
Why? Because client wants “more solid” and architect doesn’t argue. Thick column looks expensive. Seems. Actually it looks provincial.
Rublyovka Audit: Five Typical Disasters
Won’t name objects. But drive Rublyovo-Uspenskoe or Novoruzhskoe—you’ll recognize.
Object A. Residence in “Russian Empirism,” as the bureau site says. Six columns, main facade. Column height roughly 6.5 meters, diameter over meter. Ratio 1:6.5. Turned out not columns but piles. Meanwhile entablature—60 centimeters. That’s 1/10 of column height. Looks like six thick legs with thin board on top. Capitals—simplified “pseudo-Corinthian,” acanthus leaves cast polyurethane, look like plasticine. Facade budget, our estimate—over 80 million. Result—expensive caricature.
Object B. Palladian attempt. Architect clearly studied Villa Rotonda. But. Columns standing baseless, straight at ground level. No entasis—perfect cylinders. Pediment undersized to 1/8 width—flat like pencil case lid. Instead of villa—1954 village council building.
Object C. Tuscan order columns (normal choice for country house, actually), but placed intercolumniation 5 modules. That is, distance between columns five times their diameter. Palladio called this “areostyle” and used only for wood—because stone architrave can’t span that physically. When 2020s do it in stone—entablature needs metal reinforcement, and visually columns look “scattered.”
Object D. Classical portico, Corinthian order. All good except columns made fluted glass fiber concrete, bases from natural travertine. Materials don’t match in texture, tone, aging. Three years later—columns stayed white, bases darkened. House falling apart before your eyes.
Object E. Most frequent. Portico exists but not centered on main house axis. Shifted half-meter because “planning worked out that way.” Impossible to look at. Classicism doesn’t forgive asymmetry where symmetry should be.
Mistakes Almost Everyone Makes
Collected over ten years. Single list.
Mistake one: Column-tumblers. Height-to-diameter ratio under 1:8. Always looks provincial regardless of material.
Mistake two: No entasis. Straight cylinder. Reads industrial, not classical.
Mistake three: Flat entablature. Entablature height under 1/5 column height. Colonnade looks headless.
Mistake four: Catalog capitals. Cast polyurethane “universal” capitals that don’t match specific column proportions. Always either small or large.
Mistake five: Order mixing. Doric base + Ionic shaft + Corinthian capital. Happens more than you’d think.
Mistake six: Portico not to house scale. Four 4-meter columns on 40-meter facade. Portico lost, looks like porch awning.
Mistake seven: Material. Polystyrene with spray coating, painted as stone. In five years cracked, in seven—crumbling. Classical portico with columns—always stone, quality artificial stone or at worst concrete with marble chips. Never foam.
How We Work
When a portico project comes, we don’t start with sketches. We start with module.
First determine column height—dictated by house height and facade rhythm. From height—module, that is diameter. From module—all else: base, capital, entablature, pediment, intercolumniation. Only when math’s aligned do we start drawing.
Next—material. We don’t work polyurethane overlays and foam. Period. If client wants to economize on columns—we either convince them or suggest abandoning portico. Better good facade without colonnade than bad colonnade.
Capitals for Corinthian and Ionic orders we commission individually—to drawings, custom per project. Yes expensive. Yes takes time (four months minimum). But capital is colonnade’s face. Can’t economize on face.
Entasis always included. Even 4-meter Doric columns. Difference subtle—shrink by 15–20mm diameter—but eye reads it.
Finally, positioning. Before project approval, 3D visualization from right viewing angles—not bird’s eye which forgives everything, but human height from 15, 30, 50 meters. Because portico’s viewed from these distances, not from drone.
Do You Actually Need Classical Portico with Columns
Question we must ask. Because classical portico—not universal solution.
Works when house actually classical in volume and planning. When it has symmetry axis, when facade long enough portico doesn’t look appended, when lot lets you step back 30–50 meters to see whole thing.
Doesn’t work when house essentially modern cottage and portico—only “classical” detail. Like wearing tuxedo over tracksuit.
We often talk clients out. Offer pilasters, rusticated base, proper cornice instead—things giving classical feel without columnade commitment. Half the time result stronger than it would’ve been with portico.
But when portico truly needed—we make it so fifty years out it looks noble as today. Classical portico with columns—investment spanning generations, treat accordingly.
Bottom Line
If you’re designing now and portico’s in project—open drawing. Measure column diameter and height. Divide. Under 8—talk to architect. Under 7—change architect.
Look at entasis. If missing—it’s not classicism, it’s imitation.
Check entablature height. Under 1/5 column—bad. Under 1/6—terrible.
Most important—ask your architect if he’s read “Four Books on Architecture” by Palladio and “Rule of Five Orders” by Vignola. If answer is pause plus “well, sort of”—you already know how it ends.
We ten years observe classical portico with columns become marker: how well architect owns craft. Because there’s nowhere hide. Either module’s aligned or it’s not. Either proportions work or house becomes decoration to provincial palace of weddings.
