A ceremonial settlement gateway: white marble, a portico drive-through, guard pavilions
The first impression of a settlement is born not at the house but at the gate. We wanted the entrance to a gated estate to sound not like a barrier but like ceremonial propylaea — a triumphal gateway beyond which another, calmer world begins. So Propileo was born — a white marble gateway: a central portico drive-through and two guard pavilions that set the tone for the whole settlement before the guest sees the first house.

A portico drive-through between two pavilions
The composition is symmetric and monumental. At the centre, a portico drive-through: three bays on square fluted piers carry a powerful entablature with a dentil frieze and a smooth attic. On the sides it is flanked by two guard pavilions with tall windows and iron lantern sconces. These are classical propylaea in their pure form — a gate-building through which the road passes. All is built of white marble: the strict horizontal of the entablature, the verticals of the piers and the dark graphic of the barriers below.
Pavilion and drive-through
The guard pavilion is not a booth but a full classical volume: the same marble, the same pilasters as the portico.
The symmetry of the gate
The composition is strictly symmetric: the portico holds the centre, the two pavilions open from it — calm and assured.
The passage through the portico
The main gesture is the passage itself. The road enters beneath the portico and passes through three bays between the fluted piers; overhead a coffered ceiling and a powerful entablature, to the sides the guard pavilions with their iron lanterns. The barriers keep the rhythm of a stop, but the architecture strips them of the everyday: the guest does not “pass a checkpoint” but drives through a gate. In the depth, framed by the arch, the white mansions of the settlement are already visible — the portico works as a frame that promises what lies beyond.
A gate is a promise. A good gateway does not lock a settlement away but opens it: it must promise the guest the same calm and order that await beyond the arch.
White marble × wrought iron
Up close everything rests on the stone. White marble is laid in large slabs with living grey veins; the flutes of the piers catch the light in fine verticals, and the dentil frieze beats out an even line of shadow beneath the entablature. Against the pale marble the dark details read graphically: the iron lantern sconces with their cross pattern, the black frames of the windows, the striped arms of the barriers. Marble here works for status: it speaks of the settlement before the first house — expensive, calm, in earnest.
A gateway is the calling card of a settlement. We chose marble not for the sake of cost but for the sake of quiet: it does not shout, it simply holds a dignity — and there is enough of it for everyone.
The gate, the allée and the settlement in one order
The propylaea are not alone — they are the beginning of a whole scenario. The axial paved approach leads to the gate and, having passed through the portico, continues as an allée into the settlement, to the white classical mansions ranged along green bosquets. From above the whole idea is visible: the gateway with its two pavilions, the separated entry and exit lanes, the clipped landscaping and the settlement beyond the arch — all speak one classical language, and the gate sets its pitch.
The approach on axis
The approach is set strictly on axis: the gate reads from afar and gathers the whole perspective of the road to itself.
The landscaping
The greenery does not hide the gate but sets it: the clipped lines repeat the geometry of the marble.
At dusk the marble warms and the lanterns glow
The gate is beautiful at any hour. At dusk the white marble turns to warm amber, the flutes of the piers are lit at a slant, and the iron lanterns of the pavilions and the checkpoint windows ignite with gold — the propylaea read as a lit arch beyond which the settlement glows softly. In winter, with snow on the entablature and the approach, the gate becomes especially graphic: white marble, black iron and white snow. In every season Propileo holds the same calm dignity — ceremonial but not loud.
A glow at dusk
The lighting follows the architecture: it draws the piers, the entablature and the arch of the drive-through, and the gate stays ceremonial and warm.
Winter and marble
Snow reduces the approach to lines, and what remains is the essential: white marble, black iron and the gold of the lanterns.
Propileo is about a settlement that begins at its gate. White marble, a portico drive-through and two pavilions — that is enough for the entrance to become a small ceremony rather than a barrier.
